The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has a full time opening for a PREA Coordinator working at Wayne County Jail in Waynesboro Tennessee. The Wayne County Jail offers a dynamic and challenging work environment by providing inmates with meaningful experience in a self-sustaining organization. Applicants must successfully pass an initial and annual criminal background check, and pre-employment drug screening as a condition of employment. The successful applicant must complete a 12-month probationary (trial service) period as an extension of the selection process.
• Seeking a qualified individual for the position of the PREA Coordinator/Correctional Officer.
• This position is responsible for directing the administration and all pertinent aspects of the Prison Rape Elimination Act program.
• Provides technical assistance regarding the program management on a department-wide basis. Monitors the implementation process of the project.
• Supervises research and data collection regarding prison rape and sexual violence in jail.
• Aids in key investigations, prepares reports for the Sheriff, Chief Deputy and Jail Administrator.
• Oversees the preparation and presentation of program specific training to offender and staff populations.
• The PREA Coordinator will have access to agency and facility senior staff on a regular basis and have the authority to work with staff, managers, and supervisors to effectuate change if necessary.
• Statewide travel and occasional overnight may be required.
• Assisting with securing and overseeing care and well-being of inmates.
• Monitoring inmate movement within a facility.
• Conducting searches of cells, inmates and visitors.
• Preparing reports.
• Submitting appropriate incident and disciplinary write-ups.
• Supervising inmate work assignments.
• Overseeing the feeding of inmates.
• Providing inmate security at hospitals, courts, and other assigned destinations.
• Assisting with inmate processing as needed.
• May transport inmates to various locations.
Working Environment / Physical Demand:
Work involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions. Employee works in a correctional environment that requires physical stamina and exposure to hazardous and stressful situations. Employees may be required to work varying shifts and weekends and must be able to defend themselves or others against physical attack.
The qualifications must be subject to a combination of education, experience and trainings. Considerable knowledge of office practices, techniques, and technology; ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; ability to interpret program policies, rules, regulations and procedures; ability to analyze problem areas of work and recommend solutions to supervisor; excellent record keeping skills; understanding of victimology with strong ability to deescalate volatile victims; understanding of victim crisis reactions; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and other members of the organization. Required minimum education, experience, and training include graduation with at least two-years college in the studies of humanities /social sciences, business/public administration, criminal justice or another related field, and 2 years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
